The second phase was designed by Ideal Skateparks based off of input provided by the Skatepark of San Marcos (SPoSM) steering committee. The popular street course needed a transition compliment, so SPoSM tasked Ideal Skateparks with designing a mini-bowl and a backyard kidney-pool replica. These two features will have a footprint of approximately 8,500 square feet and will be completed later this year.

Fuel TV Camerman at Patterson Skate Spot

This past weekend Fuel TV brought its  ‘American Misfits’ tour to the Patterson Park Skate Spot for a filming session with travelling pros and local skateboarders. The skate jam was organized by No Comply skate shop. The 150+ attendees enjoyed free tacos provided by Wahoos while the band Endless Bummer played surf-inspired music next to the ramp.

This skate spot was designed and built in early 2007 by Ideal Skateparks as a proof-of-concept facility intended to demonstrate the benefits of the skate spot model. It was built by Ideal Skateparks with a budget comprised entirely of donations. Local volunteers also assisted in the project.

Residents surrounding Patterson Park have commented that the skate spot has been a wonderful addition to their neighborhood park. They say it is used more by neighborhood youth than any other amenity in the park. Skatepark advocates pitched the idea to the Friends of Patterson Park organization as a small skate spot that would cater mostly to the surrounding skateboarders rather than acting as a magnet to bring skateboarders from all over Austin. With the exception of the Fuel TV filming session, that promise has been fulfilled.

Ground has broken on Leander's first public skatepark.

Ideal Skateparks has begun construction of the Benbrook Ranch Public Skatepark in Leander, Texas. The Benbrook Ranch Skatepark, located at the intersection of Halsey Drive and North Bagdad Road, is a small skatepark designed by Ideal Skateparks to blend street skateboarding terrain and a mini-bowl in a 6,500 square-foot facility.

Initial excavation is already complete and Ideal’s build team is preparing to apply lime stabilization to the subgrade. The soil in Leander contains expansive clays, which can wreak havoc on concrete slabs. Skateboarding requires tight tolerances at construction joints, so any uplift of a slab can harm the end-user’s experience. Lime stabilization is a special process introduced to minimize subgrade swelling and reduce slab movement in the finished skatepark. The process adds a modest cost to the overall construction budget, but the results should be appreciated by Leander skateboarders for decades to come.
